"She loves me, loves me not"
the petals he pulled
one by one
as the day crept by
lost in his own emotions with a sigh
until the bull
reclaimed his turf
the flower desecrator trampled
found that life can be tough.

"I could! I should! I shall do!"
the dreamer proclaimed
doing nothing
as days, months, years did pass
he did nothing to last
tomorrow would be soon enough
then life did end
his dreams less real than clouds
too late a real project to begin.

We sit, we moan, we fall into despair
wasting life, wasting time
for what?
sometime it is time well spent
but he who never does, is a bit bent
a life well lived accomplishes
touches self and others
for since Adam and dear Eve
we are all cousins, sisters, or brothers.

At Washington-on-the-Brazos they met
rebels? shapers of destiny
men with desire
yet lacking in a plan
as further south the Alamo withstood
both shot and shell
to their defense was many a cry!
but "No!"
said Houston with a good purpose
a Republic you will carve today
a declaration of Independence written
not just with words in ink
but with blood, sweat, and death
for out of this sacrifice
we a Nation must somehow build
and so they did
though at Goliad and the Alamo
all perished
in the end Houston was proved right
and on the 2nd of March
Eighteen-hundred and thirty-six
the Republic of Texas
was born
at a high cost lest we forget
the Alamo, Goliad
and Washington-on-the-Brazos.
